CHAPTER 17

Kylee

THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE

It was Soleigh’s second week in therapy, and I had to admit that the first one was intense. The therapist had her lay out her past, and it taught me a lot about her.

I’ve never told anyone, but my father left my mother because of her mental illness, and I never met him. My family told me a lot of stories behind my mother’s back about it, I remembered her revealing this, and it stuck with me for some reason. I was trying to learn her triggers and not be insensitive to what she was going through, so I wouldn’t end up like her father.

We sat in the lobby waiting for Soleigh’s therapist to come out and get her. I reached over and grabbed her hand because Soleigh had been nervous about her second visit. She felt like the therapist was digging into her head, and I knew what she was feeling. There were times when I walked out on my sessions because certain questions that I didn’t want to answer. However, I always went back, faced the questions and felt better after answering them.

We were taken to the back to her therapist’s office and waited for her to walk in. I sat my phone and key fob on the table and went to get us a water from the mini refrigerator she had available for us and sat back down.

Her therapist, Dr. Akins, was an older black woman, whom my therapist referred her to because she wanted a woman doctor. Dr. Akins sat on the white loveseat across from the one we were sitting at.

“Good afternoon, Ms. King and Mr. Andrieux. Sorry I’m running late, I had a client that needed a little more attention.” Dr. Akins slipped on her clear prescription glasses and opened the folder in her hand.

“Good afternoon… I hope I’m prepared for this session. Opening up about my mother was a lot,” Sole told Dr. Akins.

“I know that was a lot, but now we know why it scares you so much to have PPD. This week, I wanted to talk about your relationship with your spouse, since you’re afraid he will leave you because of your mental illness. He seems very supportive being here with you for the second week. What makes you think he will leave you?” Dr. Akins asked Sole.

Soleigh sighed. “I didn’t bring that up to say he will leave me. I said it because I feel like my mental illness will lead me to leaving him for something that haunts me.”

“What haunts you, Ms. King?”

“His ex-hoes, his baby mama, and the drama that comes with them bitches. When I’m deep in my depressed bag, I just want him to go be with them, because I hate other women trying to have one up on me about a man. Sometimes, I feel like I’m holding him back from his career too because he takes a lot of time off to make sure I’m okay. I be wanting to just tell him to go live out his dreams.
